OUR STORY

Mooncrater Theatre is Sudbury’s newest community theatre company, dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what local theatre can be. Our debut production, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show Shadowcast," was an overwhelming success, selling out two of three performances and captivating a total audience of 350 people. For a brand-new company, this response has been nothing short of extraordinary, and it’s just the beginning of our journey.

Founder and Artistic Director, Blaine Thornton is a non-binary community-based artist from Sudbury, Ontario. Their book, Here’s To Letting Go, was awarded the 2023 OCAD U Medal for Creative Writing. They are interested in how art can be used as a tool for community-building by creating vibrant artistic spaces for people to experiment in. Blaine has been working in community arts since they were sixteen, they have worked for organizations such as Myths and Mirrors and Arts Etobicoke. They believe that organizing community is an artform, and that Mooncrater has the power to change community theatre in Sudbury.

VISION

At Mooncrater Theatre, we embrace the unapologetically weird, creating art for those who celebrate the wonderfully strange. Productions like Rocky Horror and Reefer Madness perfectly capture our passion for the unconventional and exploring the extraordinary.

We are committed to reimagining community theatre. We’re dedicated to offering paid opportunities to local actors and theatre artists. We combine the talents of both professional and amateur performers, we not only provide meaningful work for local artists but also invite the broader community to step into the spotlight and share in the creative process.

Central to our vision is a commitment to inclusivity and representation. We prioritize hiring women, non-binary, BIPOC, and 2SLGBTQ+ individuals—talented voices and perspectives that are often overlooked in the theatre industry. At Mooncrater, we believe that diverse artists and stories are essential to creating vibrant, authentic, and groundbreaking theatre.
